Nacho Mama's - A Non-Authentic Baltimore Hangout

It pains me to write this.

Nacho Mamas - your food is not very delicious. Maybe it’s because my husband is Hispanic or maybe it’s because I’m no longer a poor college student. Whatever the reason was my experience at Nacho Mama's left me feeling sad and disappointed.

This place is not a Mexican restaurant. It is a Baltimorean restaurant that attempts to serve Tex-Mex food. But let me set this straight. I love the atmosphere of this place. It is so Baltimore. From the Natty Boh ornaments hanging from the ceiling to the Elvis pictures everywhere, the look of the place is epic.

The website advertises that it is “A Mexican Hangout”. Believe me, I would hang out at this place any day with a hubcap margarita, some appetizers, and a group of friends. I just won’t order dinner.

The place was packed so we had a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. It was mostly young people with a mix of locals that filled the restaurant. Once we were seated, we promptly ordered our Hubcap margarita. While not being the best margarita I ever had, the whole novelty is great. Where else can you order a drink in a hubcap?

We ordered the veggie nachos to start and the plate was enormous. My opinion is always quality or quantity. Not at this place. They want to stuff you completely so you don’t actually think about what you are eating. The nachos were non-descript with ingredients that I could have put together myself like canned kidney beans and veggies half cooked. It was a non-event.

For dinner, we ordered the chicken enchiladas and one of the specials, the buffalo chicken burrito. The description of the special sounded amazing and creative. Jalapeno spiced mac and cheese stuffed with buffalo chicken in a burrito. Yummy.

But it was not yummy. My husband, as he was eating, described to his horror what it tasted like. During his college days, he would take chicken from a can, mix in some hot sauce, cook it a little and eat it. This is what the chicken tasted like. The burrito was stuffed to the brim with chicken from a can and nothing else. It was so shredded to smithereens that it looked and tasted like mush. This burrito was then placed on top of a bed of mac and cheese. The mac and cheese itself was not bad but was murdered by the devastation of the burrito.
My meal was disappointing as well. The best part about an enchilada is the sauce poured on top of it. This enchilada was so dry that I needed sips of margarita in between just to swallow. The sides were just fine but the entire meal felt like there was no passion or thought or care put into it.

Nacho Mama's is a Baltimorean restaurant that serves Tex-Mex food and margaritas in a hubcap. I should have know that the food would not be amazingly authentic.
